Grandmother Outreach
Respect for the elderly is one of the most beautiful traditions of Zambian life. Chikumbuso remembers to give back to 20 elderly in our community with a monthly food stipend containing mealie meal, cooking oil and candles.

Chikumbuso provided energy efficient rocket stoves to our elderly to cut the economic burden and environmental impact of charcoal use in daily cooking. Each are visited by an assigned caregiver twice monthly (sometimes more often) for encouragement and companionship.

Q & A

Find out more about our Grandmother Outreach Program below:

  • How does the sponsorship system work?

In Zambia, typically, extended families take on the responsibility of caring for their elderly. Because so many families have been affected by HIV/AIDS, many of the aged are left without caretakers. Our artists bring those elders to our attention so that we can offer our support. We add grandmothers or grandfathers to our program only as we get sponsorship for them.

When one is sponsored, they immediately receive a mattress and blanket; monthly food stipends begin going home to them at the beginning of the next month.

  • Can I communicate with my sponsored grandparent?

Yes. You are most welcome to communicate via letter or email to our management team. However, our elderly speak very little English and are mostly illiterate. They will love hearing from you, but don’t be disappointed if you don’t receive a response. You will, however, receive an annual report on them, telling you about their life and health.

  • How much does it cost to sponsor?

$350 per year or $30 per month. Click here to sponsor a Grandmother

  • How can I sponsor?

It’s easy! Send us an email to let us know you are ready to sponsor, go to our Sponsorship page and choose your payment option via PayPal, and note in the memo line ‘New Grandmother.’

  • Are contributions to Chikumbuso tax deductible?

In the United States, yes. We are a registered 501(c)3 organization and we are happy to provide you with a tax deductible receipt!
